Hewlett Packard (HP), the largest PC manufacturer based in the United States, announced the release of their first netbook which uses the open source operating system Google’s Android development. Regarding the new HP product, Charl Synman, an HP VP, states “The browser has become the desktop for many people, and the new Compaq AirLife is the next evolution of a mobile computer that is streamlined specifically for the web. The HP Compaq Airlife 100 is Android-based smartbook combines the best of the smartphone and the netbook with an almost full-sized keyboard, long battery life, simplified software, and quick online access.
The new HP Airlife 100 smartbook comes with a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset, a large keyboard (92% of full size), will allow such operations as Internet browsing, writing emails, instant messaging, social networking, photo viewing and listening to music to be easily carried out. This netbook also has 16GB solid state drive, SD card slot, VGA webcam, and WiFi connectivity. This netbook also comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display that includes a custom HP user interface that offers consumers not only a touch but a “tabbed”Internet browsing experience. Additionally, the UI offers page zooming and a touch sensitive media suite and shortcut menu.
Finally, as far as battery life is concerned, Hewlett-Packard has stated that the Compaq Airlife 100 can operate for up to 12 hours on a single charge and that it can even last for about ten days if left in standby. The HP Compaq Airlife 100 carries a front webcam as well as both 3G and Wi-Fi for Internet access. 3G will play a large part in the system’s launch, as it will initially be sold subsidized through Telefonica in Spain as well as its divisions Movistar in Latin America and O2 in the rest of Europe. The HP Compaq Airlife 100 will be in stores this spring. Pricing hasn’t been mentioned but will likely vary depending on the carrier and the length of the contrast.
