Ford ExplorerFord company just release a new 2011 Ford Explorer in New York City. The new Ford Explorer is built around the same front-wheel drive unibody platform currently employed by the Taurus and Flex. The newly restyled Ford SUV is built on a car platform and will be more fuel efficient.

Ford Company officials say the new Explorer reflects CEO Alan Mulally’s philosophy of developing a broader range of vehicles that can be tailored closely to what customers want. In some ways the Ford Explorer also seeks to appeal to a wider audience than ever before.

The new vehicle, which borrows design cues from Ford’s former Land Rover unit, represents the biggest change by far in Ford’s approach to its bread-and-butter family hauler and onetime sales superstar. The equipment list of the 2011 Ford Explorer includes a Sony Audio System with HD Radio, an SD card reader and RCA video input jacks and a an 8-inch LCD screen with intuitive five-way controls. In the marketplace, the new Explorer competes against the Chevy Traverse ($29,224), Honda Pilot ($28,045) and Mazda CX-9 ($28,805).

MyFord Touch technology that lets the driver connect with LCD cluster screens with compass and temperature display. Turning the SUV into a high-speed, Wi-Fi mobile hot spot by inserting a USB mobile broadband modem into the vehicle’s USB port. A sleeker yet wider body, with extra hip- and shoulder-room in the first two rows inside, a taller frame, a more steeply inverted windshield, and far tighter gaps in the body shell.

The 2011 Ford Explorer has two engine options: a 3.5-liter T-VCT V6 or a 2.0L I-4 EcoBoost. The new V6 is 20 percent more fuel efficient than the previous V6 engine. Ford is offering the truck with a 237-horsepower four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is supposed to give V6 performance with 30% better fuel economy. The vehicle also is 100 pounds lighter, 3.5-liter V-6, 290 horsepower (standard); 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4, 237 horsepower (optional). The 4-cylinder EcoBoost is said to deliver the power of V6.

The Ford Explorer is truly more crossover-ish than anything else and that might strike home with a lot of buyers as they are looking to downgrade from their lumbering V8 sport utility vehicle. 2011 Ford Explorer worked in a bunch of fancy-pants features like an easy-selecting rear diff and Descent Control for safer downhill trips. Ford Company has not revealed pricing for the optional engine, but says the Explorer will have a starting price $1,000 less than the current model, which means it will cost about $28,280 excluding freight charges.ford explorer pictures2011 ford explorer
